Nespresso Vertuo vs Original: Which Cup Do You Want?

Search for Nespresso Vertuo vs Original and most of the answers argue about taste. That is the least useful place to start. These are not two flavours of one machine — they pull coffee through the capsule by different mechanisms, and they are built to fill different sized cups. Settle the cup size and the taste question largely settles itself. Get it wrong and you spend the next five years brewing two capsules into one mug, or drinking a thin mug from a machine designed to make shots.

Two systems that share a badge and nothing else

Original came first. A pump drives water through the capsule at what Nespresso describes as 19 bar of pressure, which is how a cafe espresso machine works. Vertuo is the newer line and runs on a different principle: Nespresso calls it Centrifusion, and the machine recognises each capsule before it brews, adjusting its own settings to match. That reading step is sold as a convenience feature. It is also the hinge the entire decision swings on.

Recycling is worth calling out because it gets used as a tiebreaker and should not be. Nespresso says all of its capsules are aluminium and go back through the same collection points, store drop-offs and recycling bags, whichever line they came from.

What each line can actually put in the cup

This is the table people needed before they bought, and it is the part the marketing blurs. Nespresso describes the Original capsule range as three cup sizes; Vertuo advertises up to six, spanning 1.35 oz to 18 oz. Nearly everything else follows from that one difference.

Rule of thumb: if your everyday drink is bigger than a lungo, Original will never make it in one pour, and no capsule you can buy changes that.

The part nobody mentions at checkout

Because Vertuo reads the capsule, the capsule has to be one Vertuo recognises. That makes the coffee aisle look like a different place depending on which line is sitting on your counter.

The pattern shows up in our own catalogue. Of the sixteen Nespresso-format boxes in BrewSift's capsule listings, the nine Original ones come from seven different brands. The seven Vertuo ones come from two: Nespresso, and Starbucks by Nespresso, which Nespresso sells on its own site. What Original hands you:

• Several brands competing for the same slot in your cupboard
• A supermarket aisle, not only a boutique or a delivery
• Room to change your mind about coffee without changing machines

What Vertuo hands you:

• One capsule per drink size, already calibrated, nothing to judge
• Mug-sized coffee with crema, which Original cannot produce at all
• Capsules built for over ice and cold brew, which Original has no direct answer to

Taste, as honestly as specifications allow

• Original's pressure extraction is the one that produces a conventional espresso shot, so an espresso drinker should look there first.
• Vertuo's crema sits on top of far larger drinks, which no pump-driven capsule machine delivers in a single pour.

• Neither line lets you touch the dose, the grind or the shot time, so the capsule you choose is the only real control you have.

Pick in about thirty seconds

Choose Original if any of these is true:

• Espresso or a small milk drink is your daily cup
• You want to shop for capsules on price
• You will keep the machine long enough for capsule cost to outweigh machine cost
• Ristretto is a drink you actually order

Choose Vertuo if any of these is true:

• Your morning is an 8 oz or larger mug of black coffee
• You want one machine covering espresso through carafe
• Iced coffee and cold brew are part of the routine
• You would rather have no decisions in the coffee aisle than a cheaper box

The contrarian bit: if you mostly drink big mugs, Vertuo is genuinely the better machine and the closed capsule market is a fair price for it.
