Descaling coffee machine schedule: how often to descale yours
Updated
Each maker sets its own interval: Keurig says every 3 to 6 months, Nespresso every 3 months or 300 capsules, Moccamaster every 100 brews and Mr. Coffee once a month. Pick your machine, water and how much you brew to get your next descale date and the maker's own steps.
Water hardness
Don't know yours? Your supplier's water quality report usually lists it, or use the water hardness checker.
Softened or filtered for scale?
Yes only if the filter reduces hardness: a machine's own scale cartridge kept fresh, or mineral-recipe water on a distilled base. A filter that only takes out chlorine taste changes nothing here.
Descale Keurig K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café, K-Select
every 4.5 months
About 137 days after your last descale.
- Keurig ties the frequency to your water's mineral content. Our reading of that range: soft or softened water at the 6-month end, moderately hard in the middle, hard at 3 months, one step shorter at 4+ pods a day.
- Hardness unknown, so it is read as moderately hard. Check your water to tighten this.
- Keurig says the frequency depends on the mineral content of your water, which is why it recommends filtered or bottled water.
- Select Keurig brewers have a descale light. When it comes on, it overrides any date here.

How Keurig says to do it
Written for the K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café, K-Café Special Edition, K-Select, K-Compact and K-Latte.
- Descaler and amount:
- The entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution, plus the empty bottle refilled with water.
- Vinegar:
- Keurig's descaling pages name only its own solution.
- Empty the water reservoir and remove the Keurig water filter. Keurig says the whole procedure takes about 45 minutes.
- Turn the brewer off. Pour the entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into the reservoir, then fill the empty bottle with water and pour that in too. Turn the brewer back on.
- Run a rinsing brew: a large ceramic mug on the drip tray, lift and lower the handle, choose the largest brew size, no pod. Pour the mug into the sink.
- Keep running rinsing brews until the add-water light comes on, then let the brewer stand for 30 minutes while still on.
- After 30 minutes, discard any leftover solution and rinse the reservoir thoroughly.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water to the max line and run at least 12 rinsing brews at the largest size, without a pod, refilling as needed.
The descaler for it
Keurig Keurig Descaling Solutionabout $7.98
Keurig's instructions are written around this bottle: the whole bottle goes in, then the empty bottle refilled with water. One bottle is one descale.

How often to descale, by brand
What each maker states, in its own terms. We research rather than test: every interval and step on this page comes from the maker's own manual or support page, read October 26, 2026.
| Machine | How often, per the maker | Descaler and amount | Vinegar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keurig K-Classic, K-Elite, K-Café, K-Select | Every 3 to 6 months, or when the descale light comes on (select brewers) | The entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution, plus the empty bottle refilled with water | Keurig's descaling pages name only its own solution. |
| Keurig K-Supreme, K-Slim, K-Iced Plus | Every 3 to 6 months, or when the descale light comes on | The entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution, plus the empty bottle refilled with water | Keurig's descaling pages name only its own solution. |
| Keurig K-Mini, K-Mini Plus | Every 3 to 6 months | One-third of a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution (4.6 oz), topped up with fresh water to the max fill line | Keurig's descaling pages name only its own solution. |
| Nespresso Original line | Every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first (Nespresso USA guides) | One packet of Nespresso descaling solution, then water up to the max line | Nespresso says other solutions, such as vinegar or store-bought descalers, may damage the machine. |
| Nespresso Vertuo line | Every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first (Nespresso USA guides) | One packet of Nespresso descaling solution plus 17 oz of water | Nespresso says other solutions, such as vinegar or store-bought descalers, may damage the machine. |
| Breville Barista Express | Every 1 to 3 months depending on use (Breville's blog); the Barista Express manual says to descale when the CLEAN / DESCALE light is solid | One Breville descaling powder sachet dissolved in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water | Breville's manual names its own descaling powder and does not mention vinegar. |
| De'Longhi Dedica | No fixed interval: the descale light comes on at a frequency set by your water-hardness test | De'Longhi descaler diluted with water as its pack directs, filling the tank to MAX | De'Longhi says to use its own descaler only, and never sulphamic or acetic based descalers. Vinegar is acetic acid. |
| Moccamaster | Every 100 brew cycles, or when you finish a box of 100 filters; more often with hard water | Urnex Dezcal or BioCaf powder dissolved in 32 oz of warm water, in a separate container | Moccamaster does not recommend vinegar: it says it may not remove the buildup and can leave a lingering odor. |
| OXO Brew 9-Cup | A descale reminder after every 90 cycles; how often you really need it depends on your water's hardness | Any household descaling solution, used as its own label directs, mixed with water up to the MAX line | OXO's manual does not mention vinegar; it says to buy descaling solution where household cleaning products are sold and follow its recommended use. |
| Mr. Coffee drip maker | A deep clean once a month | White vinegar and water, with about half as much vinegar as water | Mr. Coffee's own method is white vinegar. |
| Other drip coffee maker | Check your manual. If it gives no interval, the hardness-based rule of thumb applies | Whatever your manual names. Urnex's drip directions for its household powder: one 28 g packet in 32 oz (1 L) of lukewarm water | Depends on the maker: Mr. Coffee uses it, Moccamaster advises against it. |
| Other espresso machine | Check your manual and use its descale program. If it gives no interval, the hardness-based rule of thumb applies | Whatever your manual names; check it before using a third-party descaler | Check the manual. Some makers ban acetic acid outright; De'Longhi is one. |
The makers disagree, so a rule from one brand does not carry to another: white vinegar is Mr. Coffee's own method and something De'Longhi rules out by name. Nespresso disagrees with itself: its US guides say 3 months or 300 capsules, its Australian cleaning article 6 to 12 months.

For the K-Mini and K-Mini Plus. One-third of a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution (4.6 oz), topped up with fresh water to the max fill line.
- Turn the brewer on. Pour one-third (4.6 oz) of the Keurig Descaling Solution into the reservoir and add fresh water to the max fill line. The measurement lines are on the label.
- Put a large ceramic mug on the drip tray, lift and lower the handle with no pod, and press BREW. Pour the mug into the sink.
- Repeat, but power off as soon as the solution starts to dispense, and let it stand in the brewer for at least 30 minutes.
- Power on, lift and lower the handle, press BREW and discard the hot contents.
- Rinse: repeat the first brew with the largest fill of fresh water only, two more times.
›Nespresso Original line
For the Original line; steps from the Essenza Mini guide. One packet of Nespresso descaling solution, then water up to the max line.
- Turn the machine on and wait for steady lights. Eject the capsule, close the lever, and empty the capsule container and drip tray.
- Put a receptacle under the coffee outlet. Fill the tank with one packet of descaling solution and the rest with water up to the max line.

- Hold both cup buttons for 5 seconds to leave descaling mode, wipe the machine down and let it rest for 10 minutes.
›Nespresso Vertuo line
For the Vertuo line; steps from the Vertuo Next guide. One packet of Nespresso descaling solution plus 17 oz of water.
- With the machine plugged in, empty the capsule container and drip tray. Fill the water tank with one packet of descaling solution and 17 oz of water.
- Make sure there is no capsule, close the head and lock the lever to turn the machine on. Wait for a steady light, about 30 seconds.
- Unlock the lever with the head closed, lock it and unlock it again, then press and hold the button until the light turns off and starts blinking orange quickly, about 7 seconds. Nespresso says to do this within 45 seconds.
- Lock the lever. With a container of at least 34 oz under the spout, press the button once to start descaling.
- When the machine falls silent, discard the solution, empty the tray and capsule container, rinse the tank and refill it with fresh water.
- Press the button once to start the rinse. When it stops by itself, refill the tank, wipe the machine down and let it rest for 10 minutes.
›Breville Barista Express
For the Barista Express BES870; other Breville machines have their own descale programs. One Breville descaling powder sachet dissolved in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water.
- Check the CLEAN / DESCALE light: solid on means descale; flashing means a cleaning (backflush) cycle, which is a separate job. Remove the water filter from the tank first.
- Dissolve one Breville descaling powder sachet in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water and fill the tank. Breville says never to remove or fully empty the tank during descaling.
- Press and hold the 2 CUP button, then the POWER button, to enter Descale mode. Wait while it heats, until POWER, 1 CUP, CLEAN / DESCALE and HOT WATER / STEAM are all lit solid.
- Press 1 CUP to descale the coffee side (about 25 seconds), then turn the dial to steam (about 13 seconds) and to hot water (about 8 seconds).
- About half the solution, 17 fl oz, should be left. Repeat the coffee, steam and hot water steps to empty the tank.
- Rinse the tank, fill it with fresh cold water to the 68 fl oz (2 L) max, repeat the three steps to flush it, then press POWER to quit.
›De'Longhi Dedica
For the Dedica EC685. De'Longhi descaler diluted with water as its pack directs, filling the tank to MAX.
- Test your water with the hardness strip and set the level on the machine: De'Longhi says this is what sets the descaling frequency. Descale when the orange descale light comes on.
- Turn the machine on, empty the tank and remove the water filter if fitted.
- Fill the tank to MAX with De'Longhi descaler diluted as the pack directs. Put a container of at least 50 oz under the hot water spout and brewing unit.
- Hold the descale button for 10 seconds until the lights blink in sequence, turn the steam dial to the hot-water position and press the button to start. From time to time, close the dial to send a little solution through the coffee spouts.
- When the tank is empty, rinse it, fill it with fresh water to MAX and run the rinse. De'Longhi's FAQ adds a second rinse with the water filter back in, if you use one.
- When the orange light goes off, turn the steam dial to 0 and refill the tank. De'Longhi says the whole job takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
›Moccamaster
For the Moccamaster brewers, including the Cup-One. Urnex Dezcal or BioCaf powder dissolved in 32 oz of warm water, in a separate container.
- Dissolve the descaling powder in 32 oz of warm water in a separate container, stirring until it is gone. Moccamaster says never to add powder straight to the reservoir, and never to put hot water in the brewer.
- Pour the solution into the water reservoir. On a Cup-One, use the full amount and pour it through in stages.
- Run a brew cycle as if brewing coffee. No filter is needed in the basket.
- Discard the solution from the carafe.
- Rinse by running three cycles of clean water.
›OXO Brew 9-Cup
For the OXO Brew 9-Cup Coffee Maker. Any household descaling solution, used as its own label directs, mixed with water up to the MAX line.
- Add descaling solution and water to the tank up to the MAX fill line, and no further. Put the empty carafe in place with the lid fully screwed on.
- If the descale icon is lit, turn the dial right until the descale icon appears and the LED ring turns red. To descale before the reminder, unplug the machine, then hold the OXO button while you plug it back in.
- Press the OXO button to start.
- Afterwards, fill the tank to MAX with water only and run a 5 to 9 cup brew cycle. Discard that water before the next use.
›Mr. Coffee drip maker
For the Mr. Coffee drip coffee makers. White vinegar and water, with about half as much vinegar as water.
- Empty the carafe and clean out the filter basket.
- Fill the water reservoir with white vinegar and water, using about half as much vinegar as water.
- Run the clean function if the machine has one; otherwise brew the mixture like a regular pot.
- Let the machine sit 15 to 30 minutes, then dump the vinegar brew and rinse the carafe thoroughly.
- Run two brews with water only, emptying the carafe between them.
›Other drip coffee maker
For the Any drip brewer whose manual gives no schedule. Whatever your manual names. Urnex's drip directions for its household powder: one 28 g packet in 32 oz (1 L) of lukewarm water.
- Check the manual first. If it names a descaler or a method, use that instead of the steps below.
- Urnex's drip directions: dissolve one 28 g packet of descaling powder in 32 oz (1 liter) of lukewarm water.
- Pour the solution into the water reservoir, brew the full tank and discard it.
- Refill with fresh water and brew a full tank. Repeat two more times to clear the descaler.
›Other espresso machine
For the Any espresso machine whose manual gives no schedule. Whatever your manual names; check it before using a third-party descaler.
- Use your machine's own descale program and the descaler its manual names. Urnex itself tells espresso owners to follow the machine's descaling instructions.
- Remove any water filter from the tank before adding descaler; Breville and De'Longhi both say so.
- Run the solution through every circuit the program covers, coffee, steam and hot water.
- Rinse with at least one full tank of fresh water, more if the manual says so.
How the schedule is worked out
- A maker's count or time limit is used as stated. Nespresso's 3 months or 300 capsules takes whichever comes first at your capsules a day. Moccamaster's 100 brews and OXO's 90-cycle reminder are divided by your pots a day. Mr. Coffee is monthly.
- A maker's range is placed by your water or use. Keurig's 3 to 6 months depends on your water's minerals, so soft or softened water sits at 6 months, moderately hard at about 4.5 and hard at 3, one step shorter at 4 or more pods a day. Breville's 1 to 3 months depends on use: up to 2 shots a day is 3 months, 3 to 4 is 2 months, 5 or more is monthly, one step shorter on unsoftened hard water. Where you sit inside a range is our reading, not the maker's.
- No maker interval falls back on hardness. De'Longhi sets its light from a hardness test and publishes no fixed interval, and some makers publish none at all. For those the tool uses BrewSift's rule of thumb below and labels the result that way.
- A descale light always wins. Keurig, Breville, De'Longhi, OXO and Nespresso machines with an alert know their own usage better than any date.
The rule of thumb when a maker gives no interval
Our own starting point, not a manufacturer figure, using the U.S. Geological Survey's hardness bands. Heavy daily use (2+ pots or 4+ shots) takes the short end.
| Your water (USGS) | Descale |
|---|---|
| Soft (0–60 mg/L) or softened | every 2 to 3 months |
| Moderately hard (61–120 mg/L), or not sure | monthly |
| Hard (121–180 mg/L) or very hard (over 180 mg/L) | every 2 to 4 weeks |
A plain carbon pitcher that only takes out chlorine taste does not count as softened. Hardness is what forms scale; the coffee water hardness checker converts gpg, ppm and °dH from your water report.

Fewer descales
The descaler is the fix; softer water is the prevention. The water guide sorts filters and mineral recipes by which problem they solve, and the descaling guide covers descaler versus vinegar in depth.

Common questions
How often should you descale a coffee machine?
Go by the maker first, because they disagree. Keurig says every 3 to 6 months, Nespresso's US guides every 3 months or 300 capsules, Moccamaster every 100 brews, Breville every 1 to 3 months depending on use, and Mr. Coffee once a month. Machines with a descale light, such as the De'Longhi Dedica, tell you when.
How do I descale my Keurig coffee maker?
On a K-Classic, K-Elite or K-Select, Keurig says to empty the reservoir and remove the water filter, pour in the entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution plus the bottle refilled with water, and run largest-size brews until the add-water light comes on. Let it stand 30 minutes while on, then rinse with at least 12 fresh-water brews. K-Supreme, K-Slim and K-Mini use a different sequence, shown above.
Can I descale a coffee maker with vinegar?
Only if your maker allows it. Mr. Coffee's own monthly method is about half as much white vinegar as water. Nespresso says vinegar may damage its machines, Moccamaster does not recommend it, and De'Longhi says never to use acetic-based descalers, which is what vinegar is.
How often should I descale my Nespresso?
Nespresso's US descaling guides say every 3 months or 300 capsules, whichever comes first, using one packet of its descaling solution. Nespresso Australia's cleaning article gives a looser 6 to 12 months; this tool uses the stricter US figure.
What happens if you don't descale your coffee maker?
The makers describe the same slide: Keurig says scale can hinder brewer performance, and Moccamaster says it can slow and eventually stop the water flow and permanently damage the brewer. De'Longhi's manual adds that limescale repairs are not covered by the warranty if you have not descaled regularly.
Does filtered water mean I never have to descale?
No, but a filter that reduces hardness stretches the gap. Breville says replacing the machine's water filter every two months will reduce the need to descale, De'Longhi says its filter widens the time between descaling, and Keurig recommends filtered or bottled water for the same reason.
