Nespresso Vertuo Plus vs Keurig K-Elite
Short answer: Buy the Vertuo Plus if the coffee itself is the point; buy the Keurig K-Elite for control over a plain cup and the widest choice of pods. The Vertuo Plus scores clearly higher for drink quality, makes espresso as well as mug-size coffee, and tops each cup with a thick crema, but takes only Nespresso's Vertuo capsules. The K-Elite makes no espresso and the weaker cup, but gives you five sizes up to 12 oz, Strong and Iced buttons, adjustable temperature and a 75 oz reservoir. The pods do not cross over.

Nespresso Vertuo Plus vs Keurig K-Elite: which wins for you
Nespresso's Centrifusion spins each capsule at up to 7,000 rpm and brews to a barcode-set recipe with a thick crema. It scores 80 for drink quality here against the K-Elite's 68.
It brews a 1.35 oz espresso and a double. The K-Elite's smallest size is a 4 oz cup of coffee and it makes no espresso at all.
K-Cups are an open format made by a huge range of roasters and store brands, and the K-Elite also takes a reusable pod for your own grounds. Vertuo capsules are all made or licensed by Nespresso.
Keurig's Iced button brews hot over ice into a plastic cup, and Strong brews a bolder cup at any size. The Vertuo Plus has neither setting.
Keurig rates the reservoir at 75 oz, enough for eight cups, and lets you set brew temperature between 187 and 192°F and turn on hot water for tea or oatmeal.

Common questions
Can a Keurig use Nespresso Vertuo pods?
No. The two systems are not cross-compatible in either direction. Vertuo capsules carry a barcode that the Vertuo Plus reads to set the brew, and K-Cups are a different size and shape made for Keurig brewers. Choosing between these two machines means choosing which pods you will be buying for years, which is worth thinking about before the machine price.
Which makes better-tasting coffee, the Vertuo Plus or the K-Elite?
The Vertuo Plus, and it is not particularly close: it scores 80 for drink quality here against the K-Elite's 68. Nespresso spins the capsule at up to 7,000 rpm and reads each capsule's barcode to set the brew, which is where the Vertuo system's thick crema comes from. The K-Elite's Strong button helps a K-Cup taste bolder, but it is still the weaker cup of the two.
Does the Keurig K-Elite make espresso or crema?
No. Keurig lists five brew sizes — 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 oz — all of them regular coffee, and a K-Cup brew has no crema. If you want espresso for lattes, or that foamy crema on a mug of coffee, that is the Vertuo Plus's job.
Which is better for iced coffee?
The K-Elite has the dedicated setting. Keurig's Iced button brews hot over ice, and Keurig's manual says to use a 16 oz plastic cup, not glass. With the Vertuo Plus you brew a coffee or double espresso and pour it over ice yourself, which works but has no special setting behind it.
What is the biggest cup each one makes?
The K-Elite brews up to 12 oz. The Vertuo Plus reaches mug-size with its largest capsules, and the capsule sets the size, so you choose the drink by choosing the capsule rather than pressing a size button. If you want to pick any size from any pod, the Keurig is more flexible; if you want each capsule brewed to its recipe, the Vertuo does that for you.
Which pods cost more?
It depends on the box, and both systems range widely. The K-Cup market is open, so store brands and bulk boxes pull the cheapest K-Cups well below Nespresso's prices, and a reusable pod lets the K-Elite brew your own grounds for far less. Vertuo capsules are all Nespresso-made or licensed, which keeps them at the higher end. Our pod price index tool ranks current per-pod prices for K-Cups, Original and Vertuo side by side.
Which is faster in the morning?
Both are quick. Nespresso rates the Vertuo Plus's heat-up at 40 seconds, and Keurig says the K-Elite brews in under a minute and is ready for the next cup in about a minute. The K-Elite's 75 oz reservoir means fewer trips to the tap in a busy household.
